At KAMM Barbershop, we often get this question in the chair. You've styled your hair neatly with an oil-based pomade from Reuzel, everything is perfect, but at the end of the day, it just won't wash out. And that's right, that's exactly how these types of products are designed.
Oil-based Reuzel is meant to last, hold firm, and not move. That makes it ideal for slick looks, but it also means you have to wash it out differently than a water-based product.
Why washing it out takes more effort
Oil-based pomade really adheres to your hair. It essentially forms a layer around the hair fiber. As a result, it doesn't just rinse away with only water and a bit of shampoo.
If you don't handle it correctly, a greasy feeling will remain, and your hair might feel heavy or sticky. That's not harmful, but it is unpleasant.
How to properly wash out Reuzel
Always start with warm water. Not hot, but warm enough to soften the pomade. This helps to loosen the product before you use shampoo.
Then apply shampoo while your hair is still thoroughly damp. Gently massage it into your hair and really take your time with this. You'll often feel the shampoo become a bit thicker; that's a good sign, it means it's reacting with the oil in the pomade.
Afterward, rinse well and repeat. For oil-based products, one wash is usually not enough. Washing twice is normal and often exactly what you need to get everything out.
If a slight greasy layer remains afterward, use a mild shampoo for a final cleanse. Not to strip it, but to get your hair truly fresh again.
What we often see happening in the barbershop
Many people try to solve it with one quick wash. Just put shampoo in, rinse quickly, and done. But with products like Reuzel, that simply doesn't work well enough.
Also, using cold water for the first wash doesn't help, as the oil will set harder. You're just making it unnecessarily difficult for yourself.
Our tip from the chair
If you regularly use oil-based pomade, give your hair a deeper cleanse occasionally. Not every day, but now and then to prevent product buildup.
And honestly, if you find that you often struggle with washing it out, try alternating with a water-based pomade. Your hair and scalp will then remain lighter and easier to keep in balance.
