Mediceuticals is a dermatological hair and scalp care line with shampoos, conditioners, lotions and complete kits. That's a lot to choose from, and not every product is meant for every problem. In this comparison we line up which Mediceuticals suits dandruff, a dry or sensitive scalp, an oily scalp, and thinning hair or hair loss.
You can find all products in our Mediceuticals collection.
Our experience with Mediceuticals in the barbershop
At KAMM Barbershop we see clients every day with a sensitive or oily scalp, dandruff and thinning hair. We don't recommend Mediceuticals based on a brochure, but on what we see in practice. We see good results with our clients, and some clients have really benefited a lot from it. Especially when they use the products consistently and choose the approach that suits their scalp. We bring that experience into this overview.
Every scalp and every hair problem is different. That's why we look at the complaint first and only then at the product. We do the same in this blog.
How to choose: start with your scalp
Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. So don't choose by hair type, but by what your scalp or hair needs. Then decide which type of product you're looking for:
- Shampoo: the foundation. Cleanses and tackles the problem, such as dandruff or an oily scalp.
- Conditioner: the add-on after your shampoo. Nourishes and soothes.
- Lotion / Follicle Revitalizer: stays on the scalp and complements your shampoo, for example with thinning hair.
- Kit: a complete routine of matched products in one package.
Not sure which problem you have? Read below, per complaint, what you see and feel, what's often behind it and which Mediceuticals fits.
Dandruff and itchy scalp
What do you see? White or yellowish flakes on your hair and shoulders, often with itching or a slightly irritated scalp.
What's often behind it? Dandruff usually results from a combination of a yeast-like fungus that naturally lives on the skin, sebum production and scalp sensitivity. Stress, cold weather, infrequent washing and lack of sleep can make it worse. Dandruff isn't contagious and has nothing to do with dirty hair.
What helps? The aim is to cleanse and soothe the scalp so that itching and flaking decrease. For this we often use the X-Folate Anti-Dandruff Shampoo, optionally supplemented with the Therapeutic Rinse Anti-Dandruff Conditioner. Want to know how to tackle dandruff best? Read our in-depth guide: What is dandruff and what really helps?
Mediceuticals X-Folate Anti-Dandruff Shampoo
Anti-dandruff shampoo for a calmer scalp with less itching and flaking.
Mediceuticals Therapeutic Rinse Anti-Dandruff Conditioner
The conditioner to complement your anti-dandruff shampoo.
Dry scalp
What do you feel? A tight, pulling scalp, fine dry flakes (unlike the oily flakes of dandruff) and sometimes itching, especially in winter or after frequent washing.
What's often behind it? Dry air, hot shower water, shampoos that are too harsh or too little moisture in the skin. A dry scalp and dandruff look alike, but call for a different approach: with dryness it's about hydration and comfort, not about stopping flakes.
What helps? For a dry scalp we often choose the Scalp Treatment Kit for dry scalp, a complete three-step package with Therarx Treatment, X-Derma Shampoo and Therapeutic Conditioner, so you don't have to combine products yourself.
Sensitive or irritated scalp
What do you feel? Redness, a burning or tingling sensation, or a scalp that reacts easily to products.
What's often behind it? A disrupted skin barrier, washing too often or too hot, or a product that doesn't suit your skin.
What helps? Here gentleness matters most. The scalp needs to calm down and get back in balance. For this we often use the X-Derma Shampoo. You can read more about causes and care in The best shampoo for a sensitive scalp.
Oily scalp
What do you see? Hair that gets greasy quickly, sometimes within a day of washing, often with a sticky feeling.
What's often behind it? Active sebum production, influenced by hormones, heredity and your care routine. Washing too often with a shampoo that's too harsh can actually make the skin produce more sebum.
What helps? The aim is to reduce excess sebum without drying out the skin. For this we often use the Solv-X Shampoo, or the Scalp Treatment Kit Oily Scalp if you want a complete routine. Read everything about causes and washing frequency in The best shampoo for an oily scalp.
Mediceuticals Scalp Treatment Kit – Oily Scalp
Complete three-step kit with Therarx Treatment, Solv-X Shampoo and Therapeutic Conditioner.
Hair loss and thinning hair in men
What do you see? A receding hairline, thinning hair on the crown or a widening parting.
What's often behind it? In men this is usually hereditary and hormone-sensitive. Stress, lack of sleep and diet can also play a role. A shampoo or lotion can support a healthy scalp, but hair loss often has multiple causes and a care product doesn't promise miracles.
What helps? A common combination is the Bioclenz Shampoo (hair loss men) with a lotion such as the Numinox Follicle Revitalizer as a complement. Take a look at the Bioclenz Shampoo in the collection.
Mediceuticals Numinox Follicle Revitalizer
Lotion for the scalp, as a complement to your shampoo for thinning hair.
Hair loss and thinning hair in women
What do you see? A wider parting, less volume in your ponytail, or more hair in the brush and drain than usual.
What's often behind it? In women, hormonal fluctuations (pregnancy, menopause, contraception) more often play a role, as do stress, iron or vitamin deficiency and thyroid problems. That's why with sudden or severe hair loss it's wise to have the cause investigated.
What helps? For women with thinning hair we often use the Folligen Shampoo, or the complete Advanced Treatment Kit, a three-step routine with Folligen Shampoo, Vitatin Conditioner and Cellagen Follicle Revitalizer. Read more about causes and products in Hair loss in women: causes and the best products. Hair loss after chemotherapy? Read stimulating hair regrowth after chemotherapy.
Dry and brittle hair in women
What do you see? Dull, frizzy hair that breaks easily and is hard to comb.
What's often behind it? Colouring, blow-drying and heat styling, too little moisture, or a dry scalp that doesn't support hair growth well.
What helps? For dry hair, the Advanced Treatment Kit Dry Hair is a complete solution.

Frequently asked questions about Mediceuticals
Do I need a conditioner as well as my Mediceuticals shampoo?
A shampoo does its work while you wash: cleansing and tackling the problem. That's exactly why your hair and scalp benefit from a second step afterwards. A conditioner:
- gives back what washing takes away: your hair feels softer and is easier to comb;
- supports the effect of your shampoo: for dandruff, the Therapeutic Rinse Anti-Dandruff Conditioner soothes the scalp after washing; for hair loss, the Vitatin Conditioner nourishes weakened hair without weighing it down;
- protects the lengths: especially useful if your hair is dry or brittle, or if you wash more often because your scalp needs it;
- completes the routine: cleansing, nourishing and soothing instead of just cleansing.
Your shampoo remains the foundation, so choose that first. But if your hair feels dry, frizzy or stiff after washing, a conditioner is the logical next step.
Is a complete Mediceuticals kit better than separate products?
If you want to tackle the problem seriously, a combination of products works better than one product alone. A kit bundles that combination in one package. The benefits:
- Matched to each other: shampoo, conditioner and treatment are meant to work together. You don't have to puzzle it out yourself or combine products that don't go together.
- A clear routine: a kit is built in steps (for example cleanse, nourish and treat), so you know exactly what to do and when.
- A complete approach: you tackle your scalp from several sides at once, instead of with just a shampoo.
- Easier to stick with: scalp care only works after weeks of consistent use. With everything at home, the threshold to really keep it up is lower.
For example, the Scalp Treatment Kit for dry scalp contains Therarx Treatment, X-Derma Shampoo and Therapeutic Conditioner, and the Advanced Treatment Kit for women consists of Folligen Shampoo, Vitatin Conditioner and Cellagen Follicle Revitalizer. In the barbershop we see that clients who choose a complete routine and stick with it often get the best results. Want to test first? Start with a separate shampoo and build up. Want a complete approach straight away? Choose the kit.
Does Mediceuticals really work?
In the barbershop we see good results with our clients, and some have really benefited a lot from it. Still, it differs per person. Mediceuticals is made to support the scalp and hair, but results differ per person and depend on the cause of your complaint. Expect consistent use over several weeks. These are care products, not medicines.
What's the difference between Bioclenz and Folligen?
Bioclenz is intended for men with hair loss, Folligen is a shampoo for women with thinning hair. Choose the version that suits you.
What's the difference between shampoo, lotion and kit?
A shampoo cleanses and tackles the problem while you wash. A lotion stays on the scalp and is a complement. A kit bundles matched products into a complete routine in one package. A conditioner is an add-on after your shampoo.
Do I have to use the whole Mediceuticals range?
No. You can use a shampoo on its own just fine. If you want more effect or convenience, you can complement the shampoo with a conditioner or lotion, or choose a kit straight away.
Can I combine Mediceuticals shampoo and a lotion?
Yes. For thinning hair, for example, you combine a shampoo with a Follicle Revitalizer such as Numinox. Always follow the instructions on the packaging.
How long does it take before I see results?
Scalp and hair care takes time. With products for thinning hair you can only judge after about 8 to 12 weeks whether it works for you. With dandruff and itching you often notice a difference sooner.
Is Mediceuticals suitable for both men and women?
Yes. The range has products for both, and for hair loss there are separate products for men and women, because the causes often differ.
Does an anti-dandruff shampoo also work for a dry scalp?
Not always. Dandruff and a dry scalp look alike but have a different cause. For a dry scalp you choose hydration (such as the Scalp Treatment Kit for dry scalp), for dandruff an anti-dandruff shampoo such as X-Folate.
Is Mediceuticals a medicine?
No. Mediceuticals is professional hair and scalp care and not a medicinal product. The products support the scalp, but they don't diagnose and don't replace medical treatment.
Can I combine an anti-dandruff shampoo with a hair loss shampoo?
That's not always necessary. Start with the problem that bothers you most and build up from there. Not sure? Ask us and we'll help you look at the combination.
How do I choose between a separate shampoo and a kit?
A separate shampoo is a fine start if you want to try the approach first. A kit is handy if you want a complete routine without having to combine products yourself.
When should I see a doctor?
Does your hair fall out suddenly or in patches, is your scalp inflamed or painful, or does dandruff keep coming back despite care? Then see your GP or a dermatologist. Care products don't replace medical advice.
