The barbershop is so busy that I hardly have time for all the peripheral tasks: administration, orders, social media, and writing blogs. But here it is, from now on, a blog four times a year! The barber has a long and rich history dating back to ancient times. In this blog, I will take you on a journey through time to discover where the barber originated and how they have evolved to this day.
The history of the barber
The history of the barber begins in ancient Egypt, where barbers not only served as hairdressers but also as surgeons and dentists. At that time, barbers performed a wide variety of tasks, from shaving beards and mustaches to performing bloodletting and tooth extraction. They were highly regarded in society and considered true craftsmen. In Mesopotamia, ancient Greece, and the Roman Empire, barbers remained important figures. They were considered skilled artisans and were responsible for grooming the hair and beards of the aristocracy. During this time, the first barber schools were established, where young people could learn the trade. However, with the fall of the Roman Empire and the spread of Christianity, the profession of the barber became increasingly less accepted. Beards were seen as a sign of savagery, and the barber was associated with pagan practices.
It was not until the Middle Ages that the profession began to regain popularity. During this period, barbers were not only used for cutting and shaving hair but also for performing simple medical procedures, such as bloodletting and treating wounds. They were often referred to as "surgeon-barbers." In the 17th and 18th centuries, the profession of the barber reached its peak. The barber shop became a popular meeting place for men, where they could not only have their hair and beard groomed but also socialize and exchange gossip. The barber's profession grew into a true craft, with specialized techniques such as shaving with a straight razor. In the 19th century, however, the role of the barber began to change. With the rise of modern medicine, more and more medical tasks were taken over by doctors, causing the barber to focus increasingly on hair and beard care. In addition, more and more new products and techniques were introduced, such as the use of tonics and lotions for hair care.
The modern barber
Today, the profession of the barber has regained popularity. Men increasingly value their appearance, and the barber offers a traditional and high-quality experience. Modern barbers not only offer haircuts and shaves but also facials, beard care, and relaxation massages. They specialize in creating a unique and personal look for each client. Although the role and tasks of the barber have changed throughout history, it remains a profession that requires craftsmanship, skill, and precision. The barber has always played an important role in grooming the appearance and well-being of men. The modern barber combines traditional techniques with modern trends to offer a unique and authentic experience.
We can therefore conclude that the history of the barber is a fascinating and evolving story. From ancient civilizations to modern times, the barber has always held a prominent position in society. Let us continue to appreciate and support the rich traditions and craftsmanship of the barber so that this ancient craft can continue to exist for many years to come.
